Client: Glasgow International Airport
Glasgow International Airport developed an improved Pick-Up & Drop Off (PUDO) facility in an area of land adjacent to the existing Car Park 2 (CP2). In addition, to enhance the PUDO facility, it was proposed that a decked car park above the Pick-Up & Drop Off zone would be added to provide customers with a high-quality experience and protection from the elements. The new car park deck will be linked to CP2 to provide an exit for Levels 1-5.
The deck structure connects to the existing concrete frames of the multi-storey car park at two locations. The connection allows vehicles to pass from CP2 to the new deck to allow vehicle and pedestrian circulation and exit. The deck was designed to be a standalone structure and does not rely upon in any way or transfer any sources to the existing CP2. The deck is designed in a way to allow 2 additional levels of car parking to be constructed above level 1.
BHC was appointed by Morgan Sindall for the structural steel frame of the PUDO as well as a concrete package. The concrete package included 75 mm structural screed on precast planks and the grouting of precast units before pouring. For the structural steel, clear span columns were 16.5m long with the columns situated in the centre of the pavements to provide the maximum available covered walkways. All steelwork was galvanised to BS EN IS) 1461 (140 microns). Within the PUDO zone, BHC allowed for the columns to be clad in a weatherproof material to protect the steelwork and for the ability to provide signage and wayfinding.
For this project, BHC utilised its in-house steel erecting and concrete squads.
