As the main contractor, BHC was responsible for the construction of a high-quality food production facility together with external works including roads, car parking etc. It was important to Deltagen to appoint a Principal Contractor with the ability to fulfil the requirement of GMP design and specification with cost-effective construction and procurement to a high standard of finish.
BHC began by excavating the remaining subsoil from the site, moving the excess soil to an adjacent site for future site development. A cut and fill exercise was completed to the required level. BHC utilised the existing hardcore bund as fill material to reduce the quantity of imported material. Following the initial site groundworks preparation, precast concrete piles were driven 23m into the ground with the excavation and preparation for the necessary concrete foundations took place.
The supply, fabrication and erection of all steelwork were completed by BHC. The structural steelwork was arranged as 6no x 6.666m bays with the exclusion of steelwork to form a mezzanine floor area. All steelwork was shot blasted and primed before leaving BHC’s fabrication workshop. The factory is clad in Kingspan KS1000RW 100mm core insulated panel with all sides clad down to the top of a 450mm high dado wall complete with drip flashing.
