Due to continuous expansion we are seeking Graduate Quantity Surveyors to work in our Surveying department.

An element of training will be required using software and systems, the final role will include and require you to:-

  • Manage all costs relating to projects including reporting.
  • Assisting estimating where required.
  • Reviewing contracts and preparing contact documents.
  • Understanding and knowledge of types of contracts and conditions.
  • Sub contract ordering.
  • Preparing interim valuations/final accounts.

Graduate Quantity Surveyor essential skills:

Job Opportunity: Trainee Counter Assistant

Trainee Counter Assistant
We currently have a full time vacancy for a Trainee Counter Assistant at BHC Builders Merchants based in Carnwath.

The role of Trainee Counter Assistant involves: –

  • Serving customers at the shop counter.
  • Assist in the loading and unloading of vehicles – manual handling where required.
  • Stock Control/ Merchandising.
  • Customer focused, polite and have a friendly manner.
  • Good communication skills and a hard-working team player.
  • Computer literate and telephone sales experience preferred.
  • Experience within a builders merchant with knowledge of timber and building products would be an advantage but not essential.

Job Opportunity: Construction Administrator – Vacancy Fulfilled

Construction Administrator

We currently have a vacancy for a Construction Administrator.

The role will require you to assist with all administrative tasks relating to BHC projects.

Duties of the Construction Administrator include:

  • Scheduling resources for sites including labour and plant ensuring current certification is in place.
  • Responsible for the allocation of plant on all sites including hire and off hire of all hired plant.
  • Responsible for maintaining the holiday planner scheduling holiday requests for sites operatives ensuring sufficient cover.
  • Arrange accommodation and travel for site teams working away.
  • Assist with the scheduling of materials for site delivery.
  • Collate all site documents for review, including time sheets, work records, check sheets, expenses, receipts and KPI’s.
  • Liaise with Project Managers and Suppliers regarding site requirements.

Requirements of the role:

  • Good communication skills, ability to work on your own or as part of a team.
  • Computer literate, conversant with all Microsoft packages and able to learn new software in a timeous fashion.
  • Graduate in Project & Construction Management is preferable.
  • Experience working on sites would be beneficial.

Job Opportunity – Assistant Material Controller

As a market leader in Structural Steelwork design and production the business continues to grow and an exciting new role has arisen for an Assistant Material Controller to join our growing business.

Basic duties of the role will include assisting the Production Material Controller with the below:

  • Booking in material and dealing with associated admin.
  • Allocating material in line with production demands and material availability.
  • Controlling stock and assisting with stock takes.
  • Liaising with the purchasing department for material orders.
  • Working to production targets.
  • Organising material deliveries with supplier and internal departments.
  • Maintaining accurate information on the company’s system, through ensuring the accurate recording of quantities, part identification and part location.
  • Ensuring Training Matrix is up to date for all production operatives.

To be successful in the role you must:

  • Strong numeracy and analytical skills required.
  • Excellent attention to detail and data accuracy.
  • Ability to efficiently organise, plan and prioritise workload.
  • Ability to interact in a team environment .
  • Structural steel background would be an advantage but not essential.
  • IT literate.

Job Opportunity – Structural Steel Loading Operative

Structural Steel Loading Operative

Main Responsibilities:

  • To review load sheets for structural steel loads, ensuring that each load is set out in a stable manner, working to BHC Loading Procedures.
  • To operate overhead cranes for the positioning of materials whilst building the load.
  • To ensure that all materials are secured as per BHC Loading Procedures prior to the lifting of loads on to trailers for transportation.
  • To ensure that the loading operation does not compromise the product quality.
  • To adhere to work schedules for priority loadings as issued by the loading Manager/Supervisor.
  • To maintain an acceptable standard of cleanliness / housekeeping within the loading bay at all times.
  • To communicate effectively and maintain working relationships with all colleagues and Sub Transport Contractors.

Knowledge and Experience

  • A working experience with structural steel would be advantageous for this role.
  • Experience in the use of Overhead Cranes / Telehandlers would be advantageous.
  • The job requires an individual who can work as part of a team or on their own, meeting targets and deadlines as set by the loading management team.
  • Full training will be provided.

This is a key role to the business and required an individual who will be courteous toward all Management, Colleagues and Clients and has the ability to comply with Health and Safety Regulations.

2018 Apprentices

2018 Apprentices

BHC would like to thank everyone that made the effort to attend our Apprenticeship Open Day in June.

Following the success of the day, we have hired 17 apprentices for our manufacturing workshop. The group included Apprentice CNC Operatives, Fabricator Welders, Industrial Spray Painters and Platers.

The apprenticeship is a modular based training course that is completed within the workplace. The modules will be used to guide the apprentices through the various aspects of the role e.g. the Fabricator Welders will gain experience in the role of marking, cutting and assembling steel components with the assistance of those who have the skills and experience to guide them.

On completion of the apprenticeship, employees will be awarded the BCSA CRAFT Apprenticeship.

Job Opportunity: Part Time Cleaner – Vacancy Fulfilled

Part Time Cleaner

Reporting to various management, the role involves maintaining a consistent level of housekeeping, ensuring that all scheduled cleaning works are completed in a timeous fashion.

Key Objectives:

  • Upkeep of Builders Merchants including the cleaning and tidying of all shop displays.
  • Maintaining clean and tidy offices, kitchens and toilet blocks.
  • Making sure the outside areas of the shop are well presented, clean windows, swept entrance etc.

To succeed in this role you will need:

  • Good attention to detail.
  • The ability to work independently and use initiative.
  • To be reliable and responsible with a flexible approach to work.

This role will require a minimum of 12 works hours per week.

BHC will be opening our doors to the local community on Wednesday 6th June 2018 BHC will be hosting our Annual Apprentice Open Day. 

There are many career options within the Structural Steel industry. Where you start does not matter as much as the many different directions you can take and how far you are willing to go.

At BHC, we offer a 4 year apprenticeship programme devised by the BCSA (British Constructional Steelwork Association). As an apprentice, you will learn on the job, build skills and gain qualifications for life.

Job Opportunity – HGV Class 1 Driver – Vacancy Fulfilled

HGV Class 1 Driver

We currently have a vacancy for an HGV Class 1 Driver.

As an experienced HGV Class 1 Driver you ideally will have:

  • Current C+E license.
  • Valid Driver Qualification Card (drivers CPC).
  • previous experience in a similar role is preferred, however full training will be given. (steel loads and plant loads).
  • Telehandler and Cherrypicker experience also required but not essential as training would also be given.

  • Good Timekeeping.
