1st Year Apprentices Begin at BHC

After the success of BHC’s Annual Apprentice Open Day – held on Wednesday 12th June 2019 –  we have welcomed 20 new apprentices into the company. 

BHC offers the British Constructional Steelwork Association’s CRAFT Apprenticeship. The modular-based training programme is delivered by BHC’s own nominated BCSA Training Validators who will mentor and guide the apprentices through the 4-year apprenticeship.

Over the past six years, Routes to Work South have supported BHC with the funding of Health & Safety training and salary funding.

As part of the apprentices’ induction, they were given a tour of BHC’s largest project to date – Edinburgh St James.

BHC are excited to see the new apprentices begin their careers within the company, where they will develop skills for life benefiting our clients and the local community.

2019 Apprentices

Job Opportunity: Line Leader

Line Leader

BHC is one of the UK’s leading Structural Steel Fabrication and Construction companies, supplying and erecting fabricated steel nationwide within the UK and Ireland.

We currently have a vacancy for a Line Leader. Reporting directly to the Workshop Manager. The role will be to assist in improving the day to day production and skillset within the company.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Assist Foreman with the day to day smooth running of lines.
  • Provide supervisory cover when Foreman is off the lines.
  • Lead by example using BHC processes.
  • Help with Health and Safety issues, glasses, RPE, earplugs etc.
  • Assist Foreman with the organisation of production.
  • Provide suggestions to improve efficiency and benefit all area of production.
  • Provide feedback on all aspects of workshop activity.
  • Monitor and promote good housekeeping practices.
  • Assist with internal audits when required.
  • Assist with integrating new employees into the company.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with both employees and management.
  • Be able to work and set out work on own initiative.

Welders & Platers

Job Opportunity – Welders & Platers

Welders & Platers

BHC is one of the UK’s leading Structural Steel Fabrication and Construction companies supplying and erecting steel nationwide within the UK and Ireland.

Due to continuous expansion we are looking for experienced Welders and Platers to join our team at our Workshop in Carnwath.

Duties will include: –

  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings.
  • Measuring and marking out plates and sections for cutting, shaping and drilling.
  • Tacking welding fabricated parts together.

Requirements of the role:-

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as Industrial Welder/Plater.
  • Must be alert to the safety risks of using welding machinery, cutting tools and lifting/moving heavy sheets of metal.
  • Mig/Mag welding experience essential.
  • Have a clear understanding of detailed drawings.

Industrial Paint Sprayer

Job Opportunity – Industrial Paint Sprayers

Industrial Paint Sprayer

BHC is one of the UK’s leading Structural Steel Fabrication and Construction companies supplying and erecting fabricated steel nationwide within the UK and Ireland.

Due to continuous expansion we are looking for a skilled and experienced Industrial Paint Sprayer to prepare and coat structural steel components.

Duties will include:- 

  • Paint spraying using two pack/or Intumescent application on heavy industrial steel components.
  • Spraying using airless pressure king pumps and hand application to a high quality standard.

Requirement of the role:-

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Industrial Paint Spraying.
  • Candidates should have experience in quality checks such as DFT / WFT and surface preparation.
  • A working experience of spray and hand application of primer/Intumescent coatings processes and operations for structural steel would be an advantage for this role.
  • Must have a good work ethic, be reliable and flexible.
  • Can work independently or in a team.

Structural Steel Estimator

Structural Steel Estimator

BHC are an established contractor who have various divisions within their Company Group.

We are currently seeking an Estimator with a Structural Steelwork background to join our Estimating team.

Your key activities will include but not be limited to:

  • Responsible for the preparation and the subsequent negotiation of tender submissions for steelwork projects.
  • Sourcing pre-project information and analysing sub-contractor quotations, agreements and enquiries.
  • Measuring and ‘Quantity Take-Off’ from drawings.
  • Input data onto estimating software.
  • Produce Bills of Quantities.
  • Build up the tender price from the first principles based on the scope of works, plans, specification and programme.
  • Produce the tender report in preparation for the tender adjudication.
  • Attend pre and post contract interviews, client meetings etc.
  • Collect and distribute feedback.
  • Investigate cost-effective and/or alternative solutions.
  • Comply with BHC Ltd procedures.
  • Maintain awareness of the latest techniques.
  • Carry out other relevant duties as required from time to time.

Required Experience

Your qualification and experience should include:

  • Ideally, 5 years or more proven estimating experience in the Structural Steelwork industry.
  • A team player who is a confident communicator with all members of staff.
  • You must have excellent interpersonal skills; maintain good working relationships with colleagues, clients, suppliers and have a personable character.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to adhere to strict deadlines on a daily and weekly basis.
  • Microsoft Office proficient ideally, with experience in the use of Microsoft Project or other project programming software.

Job location – Carnwath, South Lanarkshire with some site visits.

We currently have a vacancy for a Paint Shop Foreman. Reporting directly to the Workshop Manager, the role will be to provide safe, efficient and effective management of plant, labour and materials, to ensure that production and quality objectives are achieved.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Daily management of resources within the paint shop and to liaise with loaders (plant and labour).
  • To liaise daily with management on workload and targets.
  • To ensure regular maintenance is carried out on all equipment consistently.
  • To allocate coatings jobs to the team.
  • To ensure that all Coating Operatives apply materials per the standard methods/procedures.
  • To maintain an acceptable standard of cleanliness/housekeeping.
  • Ensure scanning of work is carried out correctly and efficiently.
  • Monitor and implement the correct usage of PPE.
  • Set up a work schedule in advance of the team’s daily start time.
  • Mentoring of trainees and apprentices to suit company methods.

Previous supervisory and mentoring experience would be advantageous however training will be provided. The ability to effectively plan, both day shift and night shift workload to achieve customer delivery requirements.

Must be able to work under pressure and have confidence in their decision-making abilities. You will be able to demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, possess good interpersonal skills and can prioritise a demanding and varied workload.

Excellent communication and organisational skills are essential as is a positive, proactive approach to work, along with 2 years’ experience in protective coatings.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To assist with shift changeovers, ensuring that correct materials, documentation and clear instructions are available for the next shift.
  • To ensure that company policies are always adhered to.
  • To lead by example.
  • To continually review manufacturing processes and suggest improvements.
  • To identify any training requirements for employees and assist with training where required, assist in the training and development of apprentices as and when required.
  • The daily management of resources within the paint shop and to liaise with loaders (plant and labour).

  • Carry out weekly audits on a rotational basis with colleagues.
  • Ordering and control of all purchased items related to your production line.
  • Ensure full traceability for all parts and accurate reports are available for clients.
  • Ensure crane checks are carried out daily and accurate reports are submitted.
  • Monitor goods in / out area and ensure the area is kept under control.
  • Ensure inductions and risk assessments are carried out before commencement of work.

Previous supervisory experience would be advantageous however training will be provided. The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively plan utilisation of labour resources.

Apprentice Open Day 2019

Apprentice Open Day 2019

BHC would like to thank those who expressed an interest and attended our annual Apprentice Open Day yesterday.

We received an outstanding number of enquiries for this year’s apprenticeship with almost 40 individuals attending the event.

The British Constructional Steelwork Association’s CRAFT Apprenticeship is a modular based training programme that is completed within the workplace. The training programme is delivered by BHC’s own nominated BCSA Validators who will mentor and guide each individual as they progress throughout the 4-year programme, enabling them to develop the skills and knowledge to fabricate large and complex components accurately, efficiently and safely. 

For the past six years Routes to Work South have supported BHC with funding for Health & Safety Training including CSCS Testing and Card as well as salary funding.

Temporary Cleaner

Job Opportunity – Temporary Cleaner – Vacancy Fulfilled

Temporary Cleaner

BHC is one of the UK’s leading Structural Steel Fabrication and Construction companies supplying and erecting fabricated steel nationwide within the UK and Ireland.

We currently have a vacancy for a Temporary Cleaner on a week to week basis.

Reporting to various members of the management team, the role will be to maintain a consistent level of housekeeping, ensuring that all scheduled cleaning works are completed in a timely manner.

Key Duties:

  • The cleaning of all offices and meeting rooms, kitchen, canteen facilities and toilet blocks.
  • Ensure that the reception areas are kept clean and tidy.
  • Ensure that the shop / office are kept clean and tidy.
  • Occasional off-site cleaning may be required.

The successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively, with the ability to prioritise workload. The ability to work independently using your own initiative. An understanding of Health & Safety would be advantageous. A reliable individual with a good eye for detail, who enjoys a busy and varied role, where you can take pride in your work.
