Europe’s Largest Crane Onsite at ESJ

Edinburgh St James

The latest aerial images of the Redevelopment of the Edinburgh St James Centre feature Europe’s largest crane in the process of lifting the project’s heaviest beams.

Over the past two weeks, BHC have successfully erected 1,000 tonnes of steelwork on site including 15 of the project’s heaviest beams which were too large for the onsite tower cranes capacities.

The Liebherr LTM11200 Crane arrived on site at the beginning of May and has the capacity to lift a maximum of 1,200 tonnes with a maximum jib length of 123m and maximum boom of 100m.

The heaviest beam weighed 38.5 tonnes and was erected using a 40m main boom and 60m of jib to a 60m radius.

The Re-generation of Hounslow High Street Quarter Progresses

Hounslow High Street Quarter

The ambitious, mixed-use re-generation project within the London Borough of Hounslow progresses.

BHC have been involved with the fabrication, supplying and erecting of 1,300 tonnes of steelwork, equating to over 3,200 individual pieces of hot rolled steelwork.

While on site, BHC have been utilising our own directly employed skilled labour. Additionally, BHC have a full range of site plant, craneage and transport which has been utilised throughout the project, allowing maximum efficiency and management throughout.

38.5 Tonne Beam Arrives at ESJ

38.5 Tonnes Beam at ESJ

The heaviest beam has arrived on site at the Edinburgh St James re-development.

Weighing in at 38.5 tonnes, the beam was lifted into place in the early hours of Wednesday 15th May, using a crane.

The crane is a Liebherr LTM11200 with maximum lift of 1,200 tonnes – the largest crane within Europe. It has a maximum jib length of 126m and a maximum boom of 100m. For this lift, our configuration was 40m main boom and 60m of jib, lifting 38.5 tonne to a 60m radius.

The Crane Lift arrived onsite at the beginning of May, causing a number of road closures around the development site, and will remain onsite for approximately three weeks whilst several heavy lifts take place.

Due to the gradient of Leith Street, we used two Mammoet self-propelled modular transporters to transport and set up the cranes position.

28 Tonne Truss ESJ

Fabricating 28 Tonne Hybrid Vierendeel Trusses for ESJ

Hybrid Vierendeel Truss for ESJ

This week, BHC’s workshop have been busy fabricating Hybrid Vierendeel trusses on line 5 – a new record for the fabrication line – for the re-development of the Edinburgh St James Centre.

Each truss weighs approximately 28 tonnes and measures 18.6m long with a total of 860m of weld.

The Hybrid Vierendeel trusses will generate a moment of 15,000 kNm at the vertical post with end connections having a force of 4,000 kN in shear.

A total of 452 M30 TCB bolts will be used in the splice and bracing connections, with a further 80 M36 bolts being used in the end connections.

A new record was achieved this week on line 5 with just over 300 tonnes of steelwork being fabricated.

The trusses will be used to support 8 floor levels of the development.

BHC Progress with Upper Floor Slabs on Metal Decking at Hounslow High Street Quarter

In addition to erecting over 1,300 tonnes of steelwork on site at the regeneration of the Hounslow High Street Quarter, BHC are also installing over 5,000mof metal decking topped with 800mof concrete.

For client and contractor, there are many benefits in coordinating a project’s steel erection, metal decking and concreting in one comprehensive package. BHC recognised the advantages of this approach many years ago and have established a Specialist Concrete Team to integrate with existing steelwork services.

We can provide Ground Bearing Slabs, External Hard-stand, Upper Floor Slabs on Metal Decking and Pre-cast Concrete.

We’re featured in this month’s NSC!

We're featured in this month's NSC

The theme of this month’s New Steel Construction magazine is City-Centre regeneration with the lead story focusing on the re-development of the Edinburgh St James Centre.

Considered as one of the most significant construction and regeneration projects within the UK, the re-development of the Edinburgh St James Centre is set to drastically change the city of Edinburgh.

The regeneration project consists of one large steel frame sub-divided up by movement joints, many of which are located at either side of the 20 bridges that span the main semi-circular shopping centre. Concrete cores throughout the site provide the steel elements with their stability.

As of March 2019, BHC have now erected approximately one-third of steel work.

You can read all about the project and BHC’s involvement here:

4th Year Apprentices visit ESJ

Last week a group of BHC’s 4th Year Apprentices got the exciting opportunity to tour the 1.7 million sq ft Edinburgh St James site.

Over 20 BHC apprentices are involved in the fabrication of the 15,000 tonnes of steelwork required for the project.

BHC offers the British Constructional Steelwork Association’s 4-year CRAFT apprenticeship. The scheme has been developed and designed by the industry for the industry with apprentices learning through module-based training.
