Olympia’s estimated £1.3bn regeneration is set to make it London’s newest cultural landmark. It will include the redevelopment of the listed exhibition halls (the Grand and National Halls). Another exciting feature of this project is that the exhibition space will remain operational throughout the works.
The project is split over 4 buildings: Central, G-Gate, Public Realm and National Hotel. With a project of such complex nature it was extremely important from the start that there was early engagement and communication with all disciplines, ensuring as smooth a process as possible.
BHC were appointed as the Structural Steelwork contractor by Laing O’Rourke.
There is a significant portion of the job focused around sustainability. As well as the redevelopment adding 50,000 sqft of expanded roof terrace space, there will be a biodiverse 3,872m2 green roof. This will help to provide nourishment for birds and other Wildlife.
BHC will be erecting approximately 17,000 tonnes of steel around 13244 pieces and 15000m2 of metal decking. The uniqueness of the job meant we needed to drop columns through the roof of a Victorian grade 2* listed building. The new building then partly projects even further over this existing building resulting in some very heavy and complicated Y columns increasing the already very difficult process of erecting them. BHC will be using a series of tower cranes for the erection of the steelwork and decking.
