London’s train stations are undergoing a notable transformation. Once mere transit points for commuters, they’ve evolved into vibrant hubs of activity and commerce. 101 Moorgate is prioritising sustainability in its construction process, sourcing a significant portion of low-carbon recycled steel for its structure. This decision, coupled with the elimination of diesel usage during construction, underscores its dedication to reducing its carbon footprint.

From a functional perspective, 101 Moorgate offers Grade A office and retail space across its ten floors. Additionally, its mezzanine level business lounge, complete with shops, changing facilities, and cycle storage, provides a modern and convenient workspace environment. Furthermore, integrated green spaces, such as a rooftop garden and outdoor areas, promote employee wellbeing and environmental consciousness.

BHC Ltd fabricated over 1,200tonnes of structural steel, installed 8,300m2 of metal decking, supplied off-site intumescent fire protection ranging from 90-120 minutes with areas of bespoke finish. As part of the preconstruction period BHC also undertook value engineering to seek out embodied carbon reduction and provide programme savings.

As is part of designing a building above a working station, 101 Moorgate provided some isolation challenges. These were met in the form of vibration and acoustic isolation systems designed and provided by BHC`s partner CDM Stravitec and was the first phase of our installation.

Two 60 tonne trusses were designed to span over the four tube lines below and formed the main double height atrium entrance for the building. The connection design, fabrication and installation of these trusses was dictated by the tower crane capacity of 18 tonnes. BHC designed bespoke hidden connections to meet the architects, Orms brief along with temporary steelwork to support the erection of the trusses. Once erected the visible connections within the atrium were site welded to achieve the desired seamless style of the trusses before final on-site application of the bespoke finish.

Another notable feature of the project was the four “dog bone” tension members that support the perimeter façade and ties back to the head of the main trusses. The tension members comprised of a series of 80mm and 60mm plates, profile cut to the required “Dog Bone” shape coupled with 200mm pins in each end. To install these pins BHC manufactured cradles to support the pin and a small jack to drive this to its final location.
