BHC Ltd were delighted to have been a part of delivering another successful project with McLaughlin & Harvey on the revamp of Alexander Stadium ahead of the use for the commonwealth games and to transform this space into a high-profile venue for diverse sporting, leisure and cultural events thereafter. Alexander Stadium is an international-standard athletics venue with a 18,000 seating capacity.
As part of this project BHC supplied, fabricated and erected 1,400 tonnes of Structural Steelwork to the Main Stand (including Design of Steel to Steel Connections) complete with 60 minutes of intumescent fire protection to the structure which was applied off-site. In addition, BHC also supplied 6,755m2 metal decking, 1,493 installations of precast concrete, precast terracing and steel stairs (1, 2, 4 and 5) along side 2,042m of Combi-safe Edge Protection.
The project features a series of 27m long cranked columns which were erected to support the 29m cantilever canopy. The longest components within the roof structure required a police escort from BHC’s fabrication facility located in Carnwath, South Lanarkshire to the Alexander Stadium site in Birmingham.
