Our Commitments
Renewable Energy
Renewable Energy
We are unique in our approach due to all of our renewable energy systems at our fabrication facility.
100% of our heat and 30% of our electricity requirements are currently provided by the following on-site renewables
- 500 kW wind turbine
- 4,200 kW biomass boilers
- We are in the process of installing an off-grid energy system comprising of a 600 kW combined heat and power (CHP) generator and 2.7 MWh battery. This, combined with our existing wind turbine will provide 100% of our electricity requirements with capacity for future expansion.
Initiatives
Initiatives
As part of our ongoing commitment to climate change and sustainability, we are actively involved in the following initiatives:
Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
- Scope 1 and Scope 2 – 42% reduction in emissions by 2030, from 2020 levels, consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C.
- Scope 3 – Measuring and reducing emissions.
- Scope 3 (part of) – 50% reduction in embedded carbon by 2030.
100% reduction in embedded carbon by 2050.
We adhere to the ISO 14064-1:2018 standard for measuring and reporting GHG emissions, and our emissions are audited annually by an independent third party to ensure accuracy.
Carbon Calculator
Carbon Calculator
BHC Ltd is leading the way in sustainable construction through digital innovation with the development of our own application suite CC+, consisting of:
- Project Estimated Carbon – Used at the pre-tender stage to extract data from Building Information Modelling (BIM) to estimate the embodied carbon of structural steel.
- Part Carbon Calculator – Tracks embodied carbon in real time throughout the production and construction phases to ensure that the carbon and environmental targets are achieved. We can then integrate that data into interactive dashboards, as well as supporting our clients’ BREEAM and SteelZero requirements.
- Carbon Manager – Our carbon database, where we manage environmental product declaration (EPD) details and records all certifications including BES 6001, ISO 14001, ResponsibleSteel, and SBTi involvement.
BHC Ltd supports continuous monitoring and adjustment of carbon strategies throughout the life of a project. Clients are provided with real-time progress updates and detailed reports outlining the carbon savings achieved.
Net Zero Design
Net Zero Design
Our design philosophy aligns closely with the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) Net-Zero Carbon Design principles & British Constructional Steelwork Association (BSCA) National Steelwork Specification for Building Construction (NSSS) Annex J. We prioritise sustainable practices in structural steelwork.
By embedding these practices into every project, we are supporting the transition to a net-zero carbon future while meeting the highest standards of structural engineering.
Transport Fuel Management
Transport Fuel Management
BHC Ltd have invested in electric and hybrid vehicles, and own a fleet of hybrid mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPS).
We have actively trialled alternative fuels such as compressed renewable natural gas (RNG), as well as RFS and ISCC certified hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) on several project sites.
Sustainable Procurement
Sustainable Procurement
We offer a tailored procurement route to provide a reduced carbon and cost-effective solution, utilising our direct relationship with the steel producing mills throughout the UK and Europe.
Supply Chain Certification
- Our steel is sustainably and responsibly sourced.
- Our steel suppliers are ISO 14001 certified.
- Our steel has independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
This certification demonstrates that our steel meets the highest standards for responsible sourcing, including environmental, social, and economic considerations across the supply chain.
