LOR Sustainability Award 2019

Laing O’Rourke Supply Chain Forum Awards 2019

Laing O'Rourke Sustainability Award 2019

BHC are proud to win the Sustainability award at Laing O’Rourke’s Supply Chain Forum.

BHC has heavily invested in sustainability and renewables within our fabrication facility. We take a sustainable approach to everything we do to reduce our energy use and costs, allowing us to pass the savings on to our clients and provide them with a product designed to lower their environmental impact.

In 2015, BHC installed and commissioned a 500kWh Wind Turbine located at our head office and fabrication facility. The Wind Turbine produces over 1.4 million kWh per year. Without the use of the Wind Turbine, we would produce an additional 760 tonnes of co2 emissions per annum.

Twelve Biomass Units are installed at our Carnwath Site, producing 6.2 million kWh per annum. The heat generated is used to warm our offices, fabrication and paint facility using locally sourced woodchips. If fossil fuels were used to heat the premises a further 3,000 tonnes of co2 would be emitted.

BHC is currently approximately 80% self-sufficient and we are currently planning to implement further sustainability initiatives including an Anaerobic Digestion Plant, allowing BHC to become 100% self-sufficient.

BHC and Laing O’Rourke have worked successfully together on numerous projects including Westgate Shopping Centre, Edinburgh St James and Soho Place.

Soho Place Reaches New Milestone

Soho Place reached a new milestone earlier this month. The project ‘bottomed out’ and the first five storeys of steelwork are complete.

BHC is working with Laing O’Rourke on the large-scale mixed-use development which will transform Oxford Street and Charing Cross Road.

No 1. Soho Place consists of two basement levels, nine upper floors and a rooftop terrace on the tenth floor with stunning panoramic views of the Capital.

No.2 Soho Place includes London’s first purpose-built theatre in over 50 years as well as three floors of office space.

The project has been in development since 2006 and is due to be fully functional by early 2022.

BHC Fabricate 75m Lattice Truss for Leicester City Training Ground

The indoor football pitch at Leicester City Training Ground comprises of a Square Hollow section diagrid spanning between a series of SHS Arched Lattice Trusses.

The lattice truss consists of 4 sections that span 75m (2.2 to 3.9m deep) between reinforced concrete buttress walls with concealed bolted connections between each section. 3 x 110mm diameter pins are used to connect the 4 main bottom boom sections of the truss. Each lattice truss weighs 23.5 tonnes.

The main roof steelwork of the covered pitch is exposed, and all connections were meticulously detailed with concealed bolting to meet the architectural requirements. A temporary central trestle will be required during the erection and levelling of the trusses.

BHC Erect Bridges at the University of Glasgow

BHC erected two Link Bridges at the University of Glasgow over the weekend of 31st August – 1st September.

The bridges – weighing 12 tonnes each – connect the existing Boyd Orr Building to the new £90.6 million James McCune Smith Learning Hub.

An LTM 1540-8.1 Mobile Crane with a maximum capacity of 450 tonnes was used to move the bridges into place.

The James McCune Smith Learning Hub will accommodate over 2,500 students and houses state-of-the-art learning and teaching facilities. This includes lecture halls, interactive teaching spaces, group study spaces and a café.

Apprentices Awarded BCSA CRAFT Certificate - Feature

Apprentices Awarded BCSA CRAFT Certificate

Apprentices Awarded BCSA CRAFT Certificate

Four BHC Apprentices have been awarded the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) CRAFT Certificate.

Over the past four years, the apprentices – Steven Barclay, Sam Baverstock, Mark Ewart and Connor Morrison – undertook a variety of training modules with the assistance of their coaches. The monitoring of the training and final confirmation of the module tests were validated by our in-house BCSA Registered Validators, Jimmy Cowan (Registered Welding Coordinator), Brian Edwards (Production Process Engineer) and Richie Struthers (HSQE Manager).

Apprentices Awarded BCSA CRAFT Certificate

BHC continues to invest heavily in the apprentices we employ and recently welcomed 20 new first-year apprentices into the company.

The BCSA CRAFT Apprenticeship is a key element to the company’s ongoing success and we are proud to recognise the importance of apprenticeships within the Steel Construction Industry.

BHC host an Annual Apprentice Open Day each Summer with the intent of hiring between 10-20 new apprentices.

Over the past six years, Routes to Work South have supported BHC with the funding of Health & Safety training and salary funding.
