BHC confirmed as Structural Steel Contractor for £1 billion redevelopment of Edinburgh St James

Edinburgh St James Centre

BHC have been appointed by Laing O’Rourke as the Structural Steelwork Contractor for extensive redevelopment of the Edinburgh St James Centre.

BHC are delighted to announce our involvement in the major redevelopment of the Edinburgh St James Centre. BHC will be responsible for the supply, fabrication and erection of approximately 15,000 tonnes of structural steelwork over a period of two years.

The redevelopment of the Edinburgh St James Centre is one of the largest investments for Scotland. The 1.7 million sq ft development will see the former 1970’s shopping centre replaced with a 850,000 sq ft of retail space, anchored by John Lewis, a multi-screen cinema, the luxurious W Hotel comprising of over 200 rooms and 150 private residential apartments. The development will become the heart of the city, providing excellent connections to the existing retails areas of Princes Street, Multrees Walk and George Street.

Throughout the duration of the project BHC will employ approximately 20 apprentices.

Distinctive Curved Form at NHS Orkney

NHS Orkney Hospital & Health Care, Kirkwall

Progress continues onsite at the new NHS Orkney Hospital & Health Care facilities in Kirkwall.

The structural steelwork is now well underway on the Isle of Orkney. The hospital features a distinctive curved form providing both shelter from the sometimes extreme environment of Orkney as well as highly functional clinical accommodation.

The building is based on a two-storey, form, with low-level pitched rood and orientated on the site to provide minimum impact to its domestic neighbours. The new purpose built hospital will include Accident & Emergency, surgical theatres, day surgery and cancer & palliative care etc.


BHC Erect 38.5m Trusses at Lydd Airport

Search & Rescue Hanger begins to take shape.

From fabrication to erection. The 38.5 m trusses BHC Ltd. fabricated earlier in the summer have now been erected on site at the new Search & Rescue hanger at Lydd Airport.

The hanger is the final new-build base constructed for the UK SAR Helicopter service operated by Bristows Helicopters on behalf of HM Coastguard.

When complete the hanger will be used to house 2 state-of-the-art SAR Helicopters.

Previously, BHC ltd. have fabricated and erected the structural steel for five other UK SAR bases across the United Kingdom.

Fabricating 38m Trusses

In the BHC Ltd. workshop this week our apprentices and tradesmen are fabricating 38.5 metre trusses for a Search & Rescue hanger based at Lydd Airport.

The hanger at Lydd Airport will be the final new-build base constructed for the UK SAR helicopter service which is operated by Bristows Helicopters on belhalf of HM Coastguard.

The new hangar will house 2 state-of-the-art search and rescue helicopters that will operate a lifesaving service around the clock.

BHC Ltd. have previously worked on five other UK SAR bases across the country.

Isle of Arran Distillery, Lagg.

Earlier this week, BHC Ltd. made the most of the beautiful weather and captured some excellent scenes of  our progress on the new Isle of Arran Distillery, Lagg.

As you can see from the video, progress on the first three bonded warehouses is well underway.

BHC Ltd. are the principal contractor for Phase One of the new Isle of Arran Distillery. The distillery is located in the small village of Lagg, on the southern coast of Arran.

Phase One of the contract will see the road infrastructure being put into place and the construction of the first three bonded warehouses. Each warehouse is approximately 1,000 m2.

The bonded warehouses are being built on the lowest part of the site, overlooking Cleat’s Shore.

NHS Orkney Hospital & Health Care Facilities

BHC Ltd. have gained the Structural Steel sub-contract for the new £64 million NHS Orkney Hospital & Health Care facilities, Kirkwall. 

Orkney Hospital and Health Care - BHC Structural Steelwork ContractorWorking with Robertson Capital Projects, BHC will provide the structural steel, metal decking and edge protection for the new purpose-built hospital set to replace the existing Balfour Hospital, two local GP Practices and the Public Dental Service.

The 14,500 m2 development will provide 49 en-suite bedrooms for in-patient, assessment, maternity and mental health needs. Additional clinical accommodation includes Accident & Emergency, surgical theatres, endoscopy, day surgery, cancer & palliative care, radiology, dental, renal, mortuary, pharmacy and outpatient.

Kirkwall’s two local GP Practices will also re-locate to the new development which will also provide support accommodation.

Collegelands, Glasgow

Collegelands, Glasgow - BHC Structural Steelwork ContractorThe £19 million Collegelands student development has hit a key milestone with the completion of the structural steel. The development will be home to 458 student rooms with principal contractor Robertson aiming to complete the development by the end of summer 2018.

For this project BHC Ltd. supplied and erected hot rolled steelwork, cold formed purlins, and metal decking along with all necessary safety netting. This project was erected using our own in-house steel erection squads, metal decking squads, mobile cranes and mobile elevated working platforms.

Fife Retail Park

Fife Retail Park - BHC Structural Steelwork ContractorThe improvement of the Fife retail park includes the redevelopment of the former Homebase unit to form a series of new retail units. The four new shops will be 7091 m2 with each new unit featuring a mezzanine. Two new small pod units will be erected to provide an improved food and drink offering to local shoppers.

BHC Ltd. are working with McLaughlin & Harvey on this project and it is expected that the steelwork and metal decking will be completed within 10 weeks.

Project Henley 2, Plymouth

Project Henley 2, Plymouth - BHC Structural Steelwork ContractorWe are currently working with Bowmer & Kirkland on the construction of a six-storey office building located at the Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth.

BHC Ltd. will be fabricating and erecting the structural steelwork for this project as well as providing metal decking, edge protection and precast concrete stairs.
